If there’s one thing pop culture vampires have proven over the years, it’s that they love drama. From Gary Oldman vamping it up as an over-the-top Dracula to Spike roaring into Sunnydale to wreak havoc on Buffy’s life to every incarnation of Lestat and beyond, the toothy undead aren’t really known for their love of subtlety.
Which means poor nice Reginald (Jacob Batalon) is going to have a bit of a rough time of it.
Reginald the Vampire is based on Johnny B. Truant’s Fat Vampire series, and is coming to Syfy just in time for spooky season. The summary explains:
Imagine a world populated by beautiful, fit and vain vampires. Reginald Andres tumbles headlong into it as an unlikely hero who will have to navigate every kind of obstacle – the girl he loves but can’t be with, a bully manager at work and the vampire chieftain who wants him dead. Fortunately, Reginald discovers he has a few unrecognized powers of his own. A new show with a lot of heart and just enough blood, Reginald the Vampire proves the undead life is just as complicated as life itself.
This trailer is, well, it’s a little awkward, but maybe that’s the point? We want only the best for Batalon—beloved to many as Peter Parker’s bestie, Ned, in the current Spider-Man films—but whether his vampire series has fangs remains to be seen.
Reginald the Vampire premieres on Syfy on October 5th.
